Sermons I'd Love to Hear

Below are some small idea seeds for sermons that might grow into great and mighty sermons when watered by the Holy Spirit. So dig in and prepare the soil of your mind...

If these suggestions inspire a sermon, let Jean know!

Ronald McDonald Christianity.
Is our Christianity the fast food variety - providing lots of calories but few nutrients (lots of flash but little substance)?

Cooking and Holiness?
When cooking, if you don’t have an ingredient, you can often substitute another ingredient. For instance, yogurt is often substituted for sour cream; milk and vinegar or lemon juice for buttermilk; and cocoa powder and butter for unsweetened chocolate squares. But some ingredients have no substitutes. Without that ingredient you can't make your recipe.

In the same way, real Godly holiness has no substitute. But many people try to switch holiness with another inferior ingredient - and their lives show the lack of the real thing.

What are you substituting for Godly holiness in your life?

Trusting God - or Not
When I think of God's hand working in my life I think of…

  • A gentle breeze;
  • A severe and violent thunderstorm;
  • An tree-cracking ice storm;
  • A ray of sunshine; or
  • A pea soup fog.

What does your response say about your relationship with God?

The Visit of the Invisible Man
We are all familiar with the concept of the invisible man, whether it is H.G. Wells classic novel, the old Abbott and Costello movie, or the more recent book, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and resultant movie with Chevy Chase and Darryl Hannah.

If the invisible man were visiting your house (or workplace), could he tell you were a Christian by what he saw or heard?

My Prayer Life - The Movie
If they made a movie about your prayer life, what type of movie would it be:

  • Action;
  • Comedy;
  • Documentary;
  • Family;
  • Horror;
  • Science Fiction; or
  • Would the movie never get made because the producer always had something else come up?

The Art of Christian War
Sun Tzu said, "The experienced soldier, once in motion, is never bewildered; once he has broken camp, he is never at a loss. Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt."

We are often bewildered by Satan's attacks - they seem to come from out of no where. The problem may be that we don't realize our life work is to be part of God's Christian army. Christian soldiers are experienced in battle, and follow their leader's battle plans without question. They know that the enemy will attack any weakness - and they prepare against that attack with discipline, determination, and prayer.

Diamonds and Zircons.
Looking at your spiritual life, what would God say is pure and precious like a diamond? What isn't a diamond is just a fake of the real thing - zircon. Hold onto the diamonds in your spiritual life and throw the rest out!

Quotes to Live By

  • Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way. (General George S. Patton)
  • Public sentiment is everything, without it nothing can fail, without it nothing can succeed. (Abraham Lincoln)
  • The highest of distinctions is service to others. (King George VI)

Which of these three statements best describes your behaviour at work? At home?

Which one best represents Jesus' life on earth?

If your quotes aren't the same as Jesus' one, why not?

Loving Witnessing - Or Not?
If you had an appointment to witness about Christ to someone, which mode of transportation would you take to get there?

  • Airplane;
  • Motorcycle;
  • Rowboat;
  • Horse drawn carriage; or
  • Your own two feet walking backwards.

We should be so excited about what Jesus has done for us that we just can't wait to share it with someone else. So, of course, we'd choose the fastest transportation possible. Unfortunately, all too often, most Christians when met with the possibility of witnessing to someone, step back in fear and then start walking backwards as fast as they can. "What if they don't like what I have to say?" "What if I make a mistake?" "What if they say, no?"

If you aren't eager about witnessing, then does that indicate your love for Christ isn't as passionate as it should be.
