A Long Sermon

To the tune of A Hard Day's Night by the Beatles.

New Lyrics Original Lyrics
It's been a long sermon
And I've been snoring, cutting logs.
It's been a long sermon
I should be list'ning, not in a fog.
But when I listen to you
I find that your point of view
Is academia true and true.
It's been a hard day's night
And I'd been working like a dog.
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you.
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright.
You know I pray every day
That you'll take lessons how to speak.
It'd be worth it just to hear you say
Something wise, don't make me shriek.
So every day I do pray
That nothing gets in your way
To reach your audience OK.
You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things.
And it's worth it just to hear you say
You're going to give me everything.
So why on earth should I moan,
Cos when I get you alone
You know I feel OK.
Toastmasters,
They will teach you to speak right.
Toastmasters,
They will make your words take flight.
Flight, yeah!
When I'm home
Everything seems to be right.
When I'm home
Feeling you holding me tight,
Tight, yeah!
It's been a long sermon.
It's so boring all the time.
It's been a long sermon.
So element'ry it's a crime.
So give me something that's true,
Can sink my teeth right into
Will make my spirit ignite - owww!
It's been a hard day's night,
And I'd been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright - owww!
So why on earth do I pray
When you think you do okay?
Wish your sermon you'd replay.
So why on earth should I moan,
cos when I get you alone
You know I feel OK.
When I'm home
Everything seems to be right.
When I'm home
Reading my Bible at night.
Night, yeah!
When I'm home
Everything seems to be right.
When I'm home
Feeling you holding me tight,
Tight, yeah!
It's been a long sermon
And I've been snoring, cutting logs.
It's been a long sermon
I should be list'ning, not in a fog.
But when I listen to you
I find that your point of view
Is academia true and true.
You know I feel all blue.
Just from a'list'ning to you.
It's been a hard day's night,
And I'd been working like a dog.
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log.
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright.
You know I feel alright.
You know I feel alright.

Rant

I was inspired by a pastor I know to write this song. Unfortunately, many people say one thing at the church door and another at home. "Good sermon, pastor." But then ten minutes later at home, they are telling the kids, "Another boring sermon. I could hardly stay awake." (Blame those kids for telling house secrets!) Or they would say in the church parking lot, "Another Sunday when there was nothing new in the message." Or "Another sermon stating the obvious." Heard all that and more.

I was worried this pastor was going to be kicked out of the church. When I told the pastor people were saying these things and offered him help, he and his wife refused to believe me (But people tell me they liked my sermons!).

Pastors, wise up! People are two faced. They will compliment your sermons to your face. But they will tell the truth to others. One person telling you your sermons need help is 100 other people who didn't have the courage. The person who has the guts to tell you the truth is often the only person trying to help you do a better job. According to research, these people are often your most loyal supporters and are trying to help you be the best success you can be.

So get over it. And join Toastmasters.
